How to play IRON NEST: the short answer

Receive the order at the teleprinter, note the target and requested effect, convert the intelligence into a map position, measure range and bearing from the current Iron Nest position, calculate elevation for the ammunition and powder charge you will actually load, set rotation and elevation, arm the intended gun, fire, then verify the result through reports, the map, reconnaissance or the post-mission newspaper.

The game is deliberately manual. A correct result depends less on moving quickly than on preserving the same target, range, shell, charge count, bearing and elevation from one station to the next.

1. Read the order before touching the gun

  • Copy the target identity, requested effect, coordinates and any named observer or reference point.
  • Separate facts supplied by High Command from positions you inferred yourself.
  • Keep the clipboard or notebook available so you do not recreate numbers from memory.
  • If a new message arrives, decide whether it replaces or supplements the first order before measuring again.

2. Build the target on the tactical map

Start with the current Nest position. A relocation or a new mission can make an old map mark wrong even when every later calculation is perfect.

When a bearing comes from a spotter, draw or interpret it from that spotter's position, not automatically from the Nest. If two observers are named, label each line so their reports cannot be swapped.

  1. Mark the known observer, reference point or target area.
  2. Resolve the likely target using the current order and map tools.
  3. Measure from the Nest to the final target candidate.
  4. Write down range and bearing together with the target name.

3. Calculate for the load you will use

Enter the current measurement into the ballistic calculator and keep the selected ammunition and powder-charge count attached to the result. The developer FAQ identifies the calculator as the step that converts map measurements into required gun elevation.

  • If the target or Nest moves, measure again.
  • If the charge count changes, calculate again.
  • If the shell or gun changes, confirm the live calculator and station state rather than assuming the old result still applies.

4. Load, lay and read back

  1. Load the intended shell and the exact number of powder charges used in the calculation.
  2. Set turret rotation from the measured bearing.
  3. Set gun elevation from the current calculator result.
  4. Confirm left gun, right gun or both before arming.
  5. Read back target, shell, actual charges, bearing, elevation and selected gun before firing.

5. Fire once, observe, then correct

A miss is useful only when the input and error are recorded. Keep the target and load comparable, note whether the impact was short, long, left or right in the terms shown by the current game, and change one relevant variable when the tactical situation allows.

Do not fire an avoidable clearing shot merely to reset the loader. A developer answer warns that breaking silence can let enemy counter-battery artillery start zeroing in.

6. Finish the assignment and prepare the next one

After the objectives are complete, read the newspaper and new teleprinter messages before sleeping. Between assignments, the Requisition Console can request ammunition, abilities and supplies. Spend against the next known problem and verify what persists in the current mode rather than assuming every Challenge and campaign rule matches.

Beginner mistakes that look like calculator bugs

  • Measuring from the previous Nest position.
  • Using a bearing from the wrong spotter or reference point.
  • Loading a different charge count than the one used in the calculator.
  • Setting the correct elevation on the wrong gun.
  • Changing bearing and elevation together after a miss, making the correction impossible to diagnose.
  • Copying a fixed coordinate or table from another run without checking the current build.

Verification boundary

What still needs live verification

This is a process guide, not a permanent control list or mission answer key; procedural objectives and patches can change visible inputs.

Official descriptions establish stable scope. Interface paths, balance, values, rewards, schedules, and version-specific behavior must still be checked in the current game build.
